The town looks the way it always looks in late July. Flags on Washington Avenue, tubers drifting down Clear Creek, a line out the door at the Golden Mill by 6 p.m. The calendar underneath, though, is not the usual one.
Three separate anniversaries have landed on top of each other, two brand-new festivals are debuting, and the town's oldest signature event is hitting a round number. If you live here, the practical takeaway is simple: between now and mid-August, there is roughly one weekend to skip and five you will want to plan around.
The anniversary math nobody is quite talking about
Here is the part that makes this summer structurally different from the last several. The United States is turning 250, Golden is turning 150, and Buffalo Bill Days is celebrating its 80th anniversary, all in the same season. The country is turning 250 this year, and Golden is turning 150, which makes it a genuinely golden moment to be here. Buffalo Bill Days began in the 1940s as a memorial trail ride to Cody's gravesite on Lookout Mountain and has grown into a multiday community festival; the 2026 edition runs Friday, July 24 through Sunday, July 26, centered around Parfet Park.
For a resident, that convergence has a practical effect. Sponsors, downtown merchants, and the arts organizations all appear to be leaning harder into programming than in a typical year, and several one-time additions have been slotted into the calendar that will not be there in 2027.
What's actually new this year
If you feel like your usual summer routine has extra events wedged into it, you are not imagining it. A few things did not exist last July.
- Golden Days at New Terrain Brewing, July 16–18. Brand new this year, Golden Days is a three-day festival built entirely around local beer, local food, and local culture, framed as a love letter to the town in festival form. New Terrain sits at 16401 Table Mountain Parkway, and the format is different from the downtown festivals: it is a destination event on the north side rather than a Washington Avenue takeover.
- The Golden Midweek Market. The new Golden Midweek Market runs Wednesdays from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Golden High School (701 24th Street) from June 10 through July 29, which is the first meaningful weekday farmers-market option the town has had. If you have been treating Saturdays at 10th and Illinois as the only produce window, that window doubled this year.
- Buffalo Bill Days at 80. The anniversary is not just a number on a poster. Buffalo Rose has stacked its bookings around it, including BELLES with the Front Range Cowboys on July 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Event Center, framed as a Nashville-in-Golden night on the eve of the festival.
Take those three off the calendar and the summer looks a lot like 2025. Leave them on and the six-week stretch from mid-July through late August is the densest local programming the town has run in years.
The two weekends worth blocking off
Not every weekend needs a plan. Two of them do.
July 24–26, Buffalo Bill Days weekend. The festival is free to attend and open to everyone, centered on Parfet Park in downtown Golden. The 80th-anniversary framing means the parade, the western programming, and the downtown merchant activity all lean heavier than a normal year. If you have friends or family who have never come, this is the year to invite them. If you live within walking distance of Washington Avenue, expect the parking pressure locals already know about to be worse than usual.
August 15–16, Golden Fine Arts Festival. The Annual Golden Fine Arts Festival takes place August 15–16, 2026 at Parfet Park in downtown Golden, a tradition of more than 30 years, free and two days, with juried art, live entertainment, and local food vendors. The practical tip most first-timers miss: downtown parking fills up fast, and the Golden Downtown Development Authority runs a free shuttle from the Jefferson County Health and Human Services building at 900 Jefferson County Parkway. Park there, ride in, skip the loop-hunting.
Between those two anchors sits ARTSWEEK's summer programming and, if you have kids or in-laws to entertain, the Colorado Railroad Museum's train schedule.
The stuff filling the weeks between
The recurring programming is what actually makes a Golden summer feel like a Golden summer. This year's recurring lineup is longer than usual.
The Saturday farmers market at 10th and Illinois runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 3, and the new midweek market at the high school adds a Wednesday afternoon option through July 29. Colorado Railroad Museum summer train rides run Thursdays through Sundays from mid-May through mid-August, on open-air coaches pulled by vintage diesel or steam locomotives, which is the easiest weekday-morning outing in town if you have visiting grandkids.
Music and Movies in the Park deserve a specific note. Movies and Music in the Park are free and held at Parfet Park on July 15, August 12, and September, three dates that a lot of residents forget are on the calendar until the neighbors mention them. If you have never brought a blanket down after dinner, the August 12 date is the one to try.
Where to land after
The eating and drinking side of Golden has quietly matured over the last few years, and the festival weekends are when the difference shows up. The Golden Mill sits at 1012 Ford Street, one block north of the Coors Brewery, in a historical former flour and feed mill, offering five local culinary concepts and two self-pour tap walls with over 50 taps of beers, wines, ciders, and house-made cocktails. Post-festival, the creek-side and rooftop patios absorb a Buffalo Bill Days crowd better than anywhere else downtown.
Buffalo Rose, at 1119 Washington Avenue, is running programming that is unusually front-loaded this summer. Beyond the BELLES show on July 23, the venue has been booking tribute nights, country line dancing with Jeff Goodwin and the Front Range Cowboys, and Sunday afternoon swing sets. If you have out-of-town guests for the anniversary weekend, the 4 p.m. Sunday Swing slot is a low-lift way to close out a festival day without committing to a full evening.
For quieter dinners on the weekends between, Bridgewater Grill at 800 Eleventh Street continues to lean Colorado-forward on the menu, with prime rib French dip, Colorado filet, and seared salmon anchoring the entrées, and the room is generally calmer than the Washington Avenue frontage even on festival Saturdays.
Why this particular summer matters if you live here
Most summers in Golden feel similar to the last one. That is part of the appeal, and it is one of the reasons people who move here rarely move back out.
